about

I wrote this song in 2006, during the last two years of GWBush second term. It's about being on a car ride that you have no control of and can't get out. Perhaps there's other metaphors...

Dirty Windows made it to #31 on Neil Young's 'Living With War' website, out of about 1400 other songs (11/2006). Let's just hope there might be hope around the bend...

Dirty Windows lyrics

We I'm sitting in the back seat of a big, gold Cadillac
And the driver smokes a cigar and wears a cowboy hat
He's speeding past the limits and burning up the gas
Don't worry about the brake lights, we got overdrive to pass

And we're driving with dirty windows and we keep missing all the exit signs
We're just driving without the headlights, no rear view mirror to see the wreckage left behind

We crossed over the border into the sandy brown terrain
And we had to put the top up, in the desert due to rain
And there's bloodstains on the fuel gauge and it's running kinda low
But we just keep on cruising, cause there's nowhere else to go

And we keep driving with dirty windows and we keep missing all the exit signs
We're just driving without the headlights, no rear view mirror to see the wreckage left behind

Enjoy the ride, cause we ain't stopping til this road comes to an end
Enjoy the ride, and let's just hope there might be hope around the bend

Well there's a party in the front seat of this big, gold Cadillac
And a bunch of us in the rear thinking we should turn on back
But I don't think they're listening or the radio's up too loud
And it's a fine line that's drawn between being smart... and being proud

And we're just driving with dirty windows and we keep missing all the exit signs
We're just driving without the headlights, no rear view mirror to see the wreckage left behind
Who's gonna clean up all the wreckage left behind?
